Arts
& Crafts Library Table by Imperial Furniture
The
Imperial Furniture Company of Grand Rapids began manufacturing furniture
at the beginning of the 20th century. Within 25 years they achieved the
status of one of the foremost American furniture manufacturers. They
boasted in their advertisements that they were The World’s Greatest
Table Makers. The tags found on each table were considered an
endorsement of the quality of woods used and that it had a genuine
waterproof lacquer finish. Today these pieces are old enough to be
considered antiques in their own right.

Oak
Dresser with Swing Beveled Mirror (Circa 1900)
This
is a really fine example of
late 19th century golden oak bedroom furniture. All quarter-sawn
oak with 4 serpentine drawers. The heavy beveled mirror frame has
applied carving. The drawer pulls have been replaced but are
appropriate. I think everything else is original.

Set
of 4 Oak Spindle Back Chairs
These
are early to mid twentieth century oak and oak veneer spindle back
chairs. They are solid, clean and ready for use. Only minor veneer separation
can be noticed on a couple of the chair seats. This can be fixed but I'm
not sure it would be worth the trouble.
Height: 37 1/2"; 18" to
seat.

Eastlake
Victorian Tall Chest with Swing Mirror
By the American Furniture Company Circa 1900
You’re
just not going to find another tall chest like this in such good
condition. This is an excellent example by the American Furniture
Company. Top of the quality food chain then and now.
Made
entirely from rich quarter-sawn oak this chest sports a fine French
beveled mirror, two small serpentine drawers atop four full-size
graduated serpentine drawers with original wood pulls. All of this is
supported by a pair of carved claw-and-ball feet. It has been
professionally cleaned and a fresh coat of paste wax applied to bring
out the original dark mission oak finish. Quit refreshing in contrast to
the ever popular and lighter golden oak.
The
original American Furniture Company
label is still attached to the back.

Victorian Eastlake Walnut Dresser Circa 1880
Here's
a bargain. I'm not going to tell you that this is the very finest
example available in the free world. It's a nice early example of a
solid walnut Eastlake dresser with some history. One of the drawers has
a plywood bottom. The drawer pulls are appropriate but not original.
I've replaced all 5 of the locksets and escutcheons so there are five
keys too. The mirror swing hardware is not original. All of the drawers
slide freely and are hand-cut dovetail construction. One of the side
panels has is cracked along it's long edge but even the finer examples
have this problem. Cleaned,
waxed and ready to go.

Victorian
Oak Block Front Desk Circa 1900
You
just don’t find these every day. I was lucky to find this wonderful
block front desk in such excellent condition.
Made from exceptional quarter-sawn oak.
I’ve cleaned all the old wax, dirt and grime and applied a fresh coat
of good quality paste wax to bring it back to what you see here. All
you’ll need to do to keep this piece in top condition is an occasional
wipe with a damp cloth and maybe a fresh coat of good quality paste wax
each year or two.

Main Drawer: 33"
wide x 23" deep.

Mission Style Library Table with One Drawer
Probably made in the 40’s or 50’s. It has been professionally
refinished with a dark mahogany stain and 4 coats of
hand-rubbed shellac. Shellac is a traditional old-world finish
but will not hold up to alcohol or standing water.

Early
20th Century Record Display Case
Made
from plain and quarter-sawn oak. This is a rare country store display
cabinet that I think was used for old 78 records. At least that's the
consensus around the wood burning stove.
A single drawer at the bottom. Some of the partitions are broken or
missing.

Washstand with Tilting Beveled Mirror and Towel Bar (Circa 1900)
Hard
to find one better than this turn of the century golden oak washstand.
Plain and quarter-sawn oak with one serpentine drawer, one flat panel drawer
and a double-door storage cabinet. The heavy beveled mirror frame has
exceptional applied carving. The drawer pulls have been replaced but are
appropriate. I suspect this piece has been refinished at some point but
all-in-all an original example.

Mahogany
Empire Splashboard Chest of Drawers Circa 1835
Often referred to as “Gentleman’s Chest”
This
is an excellent example of an Empire chest of drawers made in Boston in
1835. See the owners provenance on the underside of the right-top drawer
and inside the top full-width drawer.
The
makers stamp is on the underside of the top full-width drawer. There,
you can see that it was made in Boston.
The
wide pine boards used for the drawer bottoms and the back of the chest,
the hand-cut dovetails, the right amount of oxidation on the interior
parts, the right amount of wear on the drawer runners, the hand-planed
boards under the mahogany veneer side panels and crotch veneer drawer
fronts, and the original pressed-glass drawer pulls are all clues that
this chest is original.
You
can see several patches have been made to repair chipped veneer. This is
pretty typical on these chests. So far as I can tell, this is the
original shellac finish. It has been professionally cleaned and then
waxed with a good quality paste wax.
The
original splashboard was missing so I made one to compliment the
original using solid mahogany and a four piece book-matched mahogany
veneer. Stained to match the original, 4 coats of shellac and a
hand-rubbed wax finish just like the 1835 original.
Height:
56”. Width: 38
1/2”. Depth: 16”

The
Empire style became popular in America around 1815 and ended about 1840.
Mahogany was the preferred wood; walnut was substituted when the more
costly wood was not available. Veneer was also common. The splashboard
chest of drawers is related to the somewhat earlier Federal dressing
table with a splashboard. Earlier examples have Sheraton
characteristics, particularly the turned foot, while later chests show
the broad surfaces and lines of Empire pieces. Drawer fronts were
occasionally veneered in bird’s-eye maple, curly maple, and, as in
this excellent example, crotch mahogany. Secondary wood is pine.
Typically, pulls were simple turned wooden knobs. This piece has the
more desirable faceted pressed glass knobs with brass inlay escutcheons.
